How Many Hours Should a Housekeeper Work in a Large Family Home?

If you’re considering hiring a housekeeper in Berkshire, one of the first questions is likely to be: how many hours of housekeeping support does our home actually need?

For some households, 15–20 hours per week is plenty. Others may need 30 hours or a full-time housekeeper working around 40 hours per week. The right answer depends on much more than the size of your property.

A five-bedroom home occupied by two adults, for example, may require considerably fewer housekeeping hours than a similar-sized family home with young children, pets, daily laundry and regular cooking.

At Abode Staff, we recruit part-time and full-time housekeepers for private homes across Berkshire, including Newbury, Reading, Ascot, Windsor, Maidenhead and the surrounding areas. Here are the factors we recommend considering before deciding how many hours to offer.

Is 15–20 Hours a Week Enough for a Housekeeper?

For some larger homes, 15–20 hours of housekeeping support per week can work very well.

This is often enough where there are one or two adults living in the property, some rooms are rarely used, or the household’s requirements are primarily cleaning, laundry and general upkeep.

A part-time housekeeper working around 15–20 hours per week may typically have time to cover:

  • Regular cleaning and household upkeep
  • Laundry and ironing
  • Changing beds and managing linen
  • Keeping kitchens and main living areas organised
  • Restocking household essentials

The important thing is to be realistic about what can be achieved within those hours. If you would also like your housekeeper to prepare meals, run errands, manage wardrobes or take on additional household responsibilities, more time may be needed.

When Might You Need 25–30 Hours Per Week?

For a busy family home, 25–30 hours per week can provide a useful middle ground between a traditional part-time position and a full-time housekeeper.

These hours can work particularly well where there is more laundry, several regularly used bedrooms and bathrooms, children at home, or additional duties such as shopping, errands and simple family cooking.

It can also allow a housekeeper to work across four or five days rather than concentrating all of the housekeeping into one or two longer days.

For many families, having someone in the home more regularly is just as important as the total number of hours. A housekeeper working five shorter days, for example, can reset the kitchen, manage laundry and keep the main living areas organised throughout the week rather than allowing jobs to accumulate between visits.

When Is a Full-Time Housekeeper More Appropriate?

For a large and particularly busy family home, a full-time housekeeper working around 40 hours per week may be the more practical option.

This is worth considering where:

  • Several bedrooms and bathrooms are in regular use
  • There are young children living at home
  • The household generates a significant amount of laundry and ironing
  • Regular family cooking is required
  • There are pets requiring day-to-day care
  • The role includes shopping and household errands
  • You entertain or have overnight guests regularly
  • You would like the house consistently maintained throughout the week

A full-time housekeeper also has greater capacity for the less visible jobs involved in maintaining a home: organising cupboards and wardrobes, managing household supplies, rotating seasonal items and keeping on top of tasks that don’t necessarily need doing every day.

Think About the Duties, Not Just the Number of Bedrooms

One of the most useful things you can do before hiring a housekeeper is write down everything you would genuinely like them to take responsibility for.

The size of the property matters, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

A six-bedroom Berkshire home where only two bedrooms are regularly occupied may require fewer housekeeping hours than a four-bedroom home with three children, pets and a constant cycle of laundry.

Consider:

  • How many people live in the property?
  • How many bedrooms and bathrooms are regularly used?
  • How much laundry and ironing is generated each week?
  • Do you require daily or occasional cooking?
  • Will the housekeeper be responsible for shopping or errands?
  • Are there pets?
  • Do you entertain regularly?
  • Are there specialist surfaces, antiques or other items requiring particular care?
  • Will your housekeeper have responsibility for household organisation as well as cleaning?

Once you have a realistic list of duties, it becomes much easier to establish how many hours the role actually requires.

Housekeeper or Cleaner: Which Do You Need?

It is also worth considering whether you need a private housekeeper or whether a cleaner would better suit your requirements.

If your main priority is having the property thoroughly cleaned once or twice per week, a professional cleaner may be sufficient.

A housekeeper will generally take broader responsibility for maintaining the home. Depending on the position, this might include laundry, ironing, changing beds, household organisation, shopping, errands, wardrobe management and simple family cooking alongside cleaning.

Some larger family homes employ both. A cleaner or cleaning team might carry out heavier weekly cleaning, while the housekeeper takes responsibility for the day-to-day presentation and organisation of the home.

Understanding this distinction can prevent you from allocating too few hours to a role that is actually much broader than cleaning.

Don’t Try to Fit a Full-Time Role Into Part-Time Hours

This is one of the most important considerations when deciding how many hours your housekeeper should work.

It can be tempting to start with a preferred number of hours and then create a list of everything you would like completed within them. In practice, it’s usually better to do the opposite.

Start with the duties and the standard you would like maintained, then work out how much time is realistically required.

If a household needs 30 hours of support each week, advertising the position for 20 hours is likely to leave either the housekeeper rushing to complete everything or certain tasks regularly being left unfinished.

Realistic hours and clear expectations make a position considerably more attractive to experienced housekeepers and help create a role that can work well long term.

How Should Housekeeping Hours Be Spread Across the Week?

The number of hours isn’t the only consideration. How those hours are distributed can make a significant difference.

For a quieter household, two or three longer days may be ideal. This gives the housekeeper time to complete deeper cleaning, laundry and ironing during each visit.

For a busy family home, shorter hours across four or five days may be more useful. Regular attendance means laundry can be kept moving, beds and bathrooms can be refreshed as needed and kitchens and living spaces can be reset throughout the week.

If family cooking or afternoon support is part of the role, later working hours may also make more sense than a traditional morning housekeeping schedule.

The best arrangement is the one that reflects how your household actually runs.

How Do You Decide the Right Hours for Your Housekeeper?

Before advertising a housekeeping position, we recommend thinking about three things: the property, the people and the duties.

Consider how much of the property is regularly used, how busy the household is and exactly what you expect your housekeeper to manage.

From there, you can decide whether you need a housekeeper for a few mornings each week, 25–30 hours spread across several days, or a full-time member of household staff.

If you’re unsure, this is something a specialist domestic staffing agency can help you establish before recruitment begins.
