The North Wessex Downs is home to some of the most beautiful private houses and country estates in southern England. Stretching across parts of Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire, it is a wonderfully rural corner of the country, despite London remaining within relatively easy reach.

Private houses and estates across the North Wessex Downs

The North Wessex Downs covers around 668 square miles, stretching across four counties and encompassing chalk downland, farmland, woodland, river valleys, historic villages and market towns. The landscape has been protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1972 and is now known as the North Wessex Downs National Landscape.

The Ridgeway runs through it, alongside some of England’s best-known prehistoric landscapes, including Avebury and the Uffington White Horse. Historic manor houses, parks, gardens, farms and estates form part of the character of the landscape too.

For anyone local, though, it is perhaps easier to understand through its places.

In Berkshire, the landscape runs through and around areas including Pangbourne, the Berkshire Downs, Newbury, Hungerford and Lambourn. It continues west towards Marlborough, Pewsey and the Wiltshire Downs, north into Oxfordshire and south towards the Hampshire Downs.

It is a large area, but there is a remarkably consistent feel to much of it: beautiful villages, rural family homes, equestrian properties, farms and larger country estates, often sitting rather discreetly within the landscape.

Behind many of those front doors is another world entirely — and quite often, a team of household and estate staff keeping everything running.

What household staff do people employ in the North Wessex Downs?

The right household team depends enormously on the property and the family living in it.

A busy family home outside Newbury may simply need an experienced housekeeper and nanny. A larger country property near Hungerford might employ a housekeeper, gardener and private chef. On a substantial rural estate, there may be an estate manager overseeing an established team across the house, gardens and wider grounds.

Housekeepers are at the heart of many private homes.

Depending on the property, a private housekeeper may be responsible for cleaning and maintaining the home, laundry and ironing, wardrobe care, household organisation, preparing guest bedrooms and helping the house run smoothly from day to day.

In larger properties, there may be several housekeepers working together or a Head Housekeeper responsible for managing the household team.

Gardeners and estate staff

Gardens and grounds are a particularly important part of many properties across the North Wessex Downs.

Farmland and woodland dominate much of the wider landscape, while equestrian activity is also significant, particularly around areas such as Lambourn.

Private estates may therefore employ experienced gardeners, groundspeople, estate workers or an Estate Manager to look after everything from formal gardens and lawns to woodland, paddocks, orchards and wider acreage.

Domestic couples

The traditional domestic couple remains particularly well suited to country-house life.

Often living in a cottage or separate accommodation on the estate, a domestic couple can provide broad support across both the house and grounds.

One person might concentrate predominantly on housekeeping, laundry and household organisation, while the other looks after gardens, maintenance, driving or estate duties.

For households wanting continuity without employing a large team, an experienced domestic couple can be an excellent solution.

Nannies

For families with children, an experienced private nanny can provide consistency around nursery, school, activities and family life.

Recruiting a nanny for a rural household brings its own considerations. Driving is often essential, and candidates need to be comfortable with the practicalities of country living and sometimes considerable distances between home, school and activities.

Private chefs

A permanent private chef might not be necessary in every country house, but for households that entertain regularly, travel between residences or have particular dietary requirements, they can become an invaluable member of the household team.

Other families employ a Housekeeper/Cook or Chef/House Manager, particularly where good family cooking is required rather than restaurant-style dining every day.

Chauffeurs and private PAs

Larger households may also employ chauffeurs, private PAs, household managers and other specialist staff.

Country-based chauffeur roles can look quite different from their London equivalents, with longer-distance driving, airport transfers, school runs and journeys between a principal’s country and London residences all potentially forming part of the role.

Recruiting for a country house is different

This is perhaps where knowing the local area really matters.

Ten miles on a map can be a very different proposition on country roads. A candidate who is ideally located for one village may find another property surprisingly difficult to reach every morning.

Public transport can be limited. Driving is frequently essential. Live-in accommodation can dramatically change the candidate pool available to a household.

Then there are the realities of the property itself.

Dogs, horses, muddy boots, log fires, deliveries arriving at obscure entrances, tradespeople on site, large gardens, weekend guests and family members coming and going are simply part of life in many country homes.

A brilliant London housekeeper is not automatically a brilliant country housekeeper.

The technical skills may be very similar, but enjoying the environment matters too. The best placements tend to happen when somebody genuinely suits the rhythm of the household as well as the job description.

Local household recruitment from West Berkshire

Abode Staff is based in West Berkshire, close to the heart of the North Wessex Downs.

That means many of the places appearing on our job briefs are places we already know.

We understand the practical difference between recruiting for a property in Newbury and an estate tucked away outside Hungerford; why a candidate’s commute matters; when staff accommodation can make a difficult search considerably easier; and why somebody who has previously worked on a rural estate may be particularly valuable.

It also means our work naturally crosses county boundaries.

A household might technically sit in Berkshire while its nearest candidate lives in Wiltshire. Another may be close to the Hampshire border. For households here, recruiting according to an arbitrary county line often makes very little sense.

We would much rather look at the household, its location and the realistic local candidate market.

Finding the right staff for your home or estate

Private household recruitment is personal.

Two houses of a similar size can need completely different teams, and adding more staff is not always the answer. Sometimes a carefully structured Housekeeper/Cook position works better than employing two people. Elsewhere, separating household and estate responsibilities makes far more sense.
