Job Description

We are seeking a knowledgable and experienced head gardener for our estate in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. This role is for a fully staffed estate and will involve leading other staff and contractors. Including part-time gardeners and household maintenance staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the outdoor team, ensuring efficient coordination and performance.
  • Maintain excellent communication within the team and with other staff members.
  • Undertake practical tasks as required, demonstrating versatility and hands-on capability in gardening duties.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational skills, contributing to the collective expertise of the team.
  • Show a keen eye for detail and a passion for maintaining beautiful grounds and gardens.
  • Manage and maintain vegetable gardens with expertise and dedication.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of plants, their care, and development, including beds, borders, lawns, shrubs, and trees.
  • Coordinate with contractors effectively, overseeing their work to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
  • Maintain and upkeep garden tools, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in managing gardens and grounds, preferably within similar settings.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both within the team and with external contractors.
  • Passion for gardening and a proactive, self-motivated approach to work.
  • Flexibility in work hours and tasks, adapting to seasonal demands.
  • Ability to live within commutable distance
  • Knowledge of garden machinery and equipment maintenance.
  • Formal gardening qualifications such as RHS certification or tree surgeon qualifications are desirable.
