We asked an experienced full-time housekeeper working within a private family home to share an honest insight into her daily routine, responsibilities and the level of organisation involved in managing a large household professionally.

As a professional housekeeper working full time in a busy family home, each day brings different tasks and challenges. My role is not only about ensuring a clean and organised living space but also contributing to the overall functionality of the household. Let me take you through a glimpse of my daily routine and the expertise I bring to every household!
A day in the life of a professional housekeeper
As a full-time housekeeper, my day begins at 9 am, ready to tackle the tasks that ensure a seamless and well-maintained home for the family I work with. I start by prioritising essential tasks, such as cleaning and organising their most used spaces.
9:00 am – 12:00 pm: Morning Routine
- Morning commences with thorough cleaning of most used areas, including the living room, kitchen, and dining spaces.
- Laundry duties are also undertaken during this time, ensuring that clothes and linens are fresh and neatly arranged in their wardrobes.
- I pay attention to specific details, such as dusting, vacuuming, and polishing surfaces to uphold a pristine environment as I know the family like their house kept to a very high standard.
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm: Lunch Break
- A well-deserved break to recharge, ensuring I am ready for the afternoon tasks!
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Specialised Tasks
- Afternoon hours are dedicated to more specialised tasks, such as deep cleaning of specific areas or addressing any additional requests from the family.
- Sometimes specialised tasks might be cleaning out the fridge/freezer or organising cupboards.
- Sometimes the family ask me to batch cook if they have a busy week so I would do this during the afternoon as well.
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Organising and Errands
- I like to dedicate an hour to organising paperwork, planning my schedule and running errands if needed, this might include picking up cleaning supplies or anything else the family need.
- I usually plan the specialised tasks at the beginning of the week and speak to the principals about anything that they particularly want me to achieve that week.
5:00 pm – 6:00 pm: Final Touches and Daily Recap
- The late afternoon is reserved for final touches, making sure everything is in its rightful place.
- If the principal is home I would have a quick recap with them, letting them know if I have noticed anything that needs fixing and asking them if there is anything they would like me to do. I then say my goodbyes and go home for the day. Ready to start again tomorrow!
The family have a very large home so every day is different and I tend to focus on a different area each day of the week. But generally my day follows the above schedule.
